Advocates Strive To Get Victims Compensation & Information

Friday July 10, 2009 - The victims of major crimes might think they stand alone, but this is not the case in Georgia where victims’ advocates work hard on their behalf. The advocates are there to ensure that victims compensation and other rights are not overlooked during a criminal case.

These professionals, often employed by law enforcement agencies and district attorney’s offices, are there to help ensure that victims compensation is received, if applicable, and that important information is passed on to those who have suffered at the hands of others.

Victims compensation and information that advocates can help with is rather extensive in Georgia. Thanks to the Crime Victims Compensation Program and its emergency fund, those who have been victimized might be eligible for financial assistance in regard to:

• Medical expenses;
• Funeral expenses;
• Crime scene clean-up;
• Counseling;
• Loss of wages;
• Loss of support benefits.

Victims compensation advocates are available to help people obtain information about the emergency fund and to assist them in other ways, as well. In addition to direct victims’ compensation, the state of Georgia also makes sure advocates are available to help the victims of major crimes like rape or aid the family members of a homicide by helping them stay on top of important events related to criminal investigations.

Advocates help ensure that victims compensation extends to being kept abreast of such things as actual arrests, court dates and release dates. In addition, victims are provided protection from intimidation and harassment.

Law enforcement and legal agencies throughout the state of Georgia have advocates on staff to ensure that victims compensation is taken seriously and victims’ rights are upheld. Victims do not stand alone in this state.
