Military Remains Transport
Tuesday June 05, 2007
- Families of fallen military members no longer have to travel as far to pick up their loved one's remains. The 2007 National Defense Appropriations Act enabled the Office of the Secretary of Defense to provide military or contracted air transport for all servicemen who are slain in the combat theater. Previously, remains were transported to the nearest commercial airport. Under the new directive, the aircraft flies directly from Dover Air Force Base to the nearest airport of the soldier/marine/sailor/airman's final destination. Under the National Defense Appropriations Act, this transport is now facilitated by military personnel who are accompanied by a uniformed honor guard to escort the remains. As former Mortuary Affairs Specialists with the United States Marine Corps, Biotrauma understands the importance of this legislation and wishes our fallen servicemen's families well.
